At this exact moment

the subway train came up

from the underground. The light

went from fluorescent to tempered,

giving way to darkness

mostly, and to the city’s

various pinprick glimmers.

I put down L’ENCHANTEUR

and gazed out the windows

at the harbor,

blackness, and lights from boats.

People started calling

their loved ones to tell them

they’d be home in minutes.

Some phones rang. I looked

at the manuscript and frowned.

Was Ron messing with me?

Did he really like this book?

Where could it go from there?

Didn’t the Six Million Dollar Man

have a plotline where he fights

Bigfoot, who’s also a robot?

What’s going to happen

tomorrow? Will I go

to my job? Will they let me

inside the building?

What’s going to happen

when I get home and tell

my wife about my day?

Will I actually use

“sexual harassment”

to describe what happened?

These and other questions

occupied me until

the train went underground

again. I gathered up my stuff

and stood by the train doors

waiting, with the others.
